The differential is directly mechanically connected by means of the drive shafts. When the drive wheels are moved, the differential also moves.

However, there is an exception for off-road vehicles with a switchable front wheel drive. They have freewheel hubs that can be placed on “Free” (see picture, almost visible red rotary switches. In this case, the front differential, the drive shafts and the cardan shaft rest during the drive. This saves a little fuel on clean roads.

The differential is always in use, it cannot be separated. The gear can be switched to idle, or the clutch can be engaged, then the motor and the gear are separated and have no frictional connection
