Generate your own electricity with a turbine on the river?
Hi,
I have a question:
What are the legal implications (licenses/water rights) and when does it become worthwhile to operate a water turbine? I have a property on the edge of a forest, in a secluded location with just one house.
The house is located in a former mining area, so there are large old lakes. This lake feeds a medium-sized stream that runs through my property.
Out of pure interest, could a turbine be used there? When would it be worthwhile, and how complicated would it be? And how much would it cost to acquire it?
Thank you very much
The German hydroelectric power plants are best suited to the legal questions http://www.bundesverband-deutscher-wasserkraftwerke.de/ Information. Whether the operation of a small hydropower plant is worthwhile depends mainly on the gradient (at least two meters of altitude difference) and the available water quantity. If you obtain an approval, this applies only to part of the available quantity of water, since a residual quantity of water must be guaranteed. In the case of low gradient heights, a simple vortex turbine or a kaplan turbine is recommended, with larger gradient heights and corresponding higher pressure, a Pelton turbine is also suitable. Whether the whole is economically predicted in the face of gradients and available average water quantity, only a person skilled in the art can determine the specific case.
The best way to get to the community is to ask Bauamt if this is allowed.
Then the question is how big the brook is. Quantity of water and falls?
Then you should see what makes sense in this brook.
Evtl. Must be built a fish stairs.

This is not desired by the public authorities. I once had the idea of installing a water supply (rain water) in my house in order not to waste precious drinking water. From the church I got an approx. 20 pages thick booklet with regulations to be observed.
It was noted that the municipality was not interested in water saving. You wanted to sell expensive drinking water.
now for a turbine are 2 points important water quantity and gradients
If only a brook passes, it will be difficult for an underestimated water wheel to move at all. A turbine already needs more pressure or gradient
