Game ideas for fancy rats?

Hey, we recently got four pet rats in our shared apartment. They're still very young and playful. I wanted to ask if anyone here has any good ideas for keeping these little rascals busy, ideally with homemade toys. We've bought a few things, but that gets expensive in the long run and eventually gets boring for the rats. So far, we've tried a few hiding boxes, a vegetable garland, and a rummaging box.

If anyone has any ideas for what else we could offer, that would be great. Ideally, things you can make out of cardboard, but I'm open to other ideas, too.

Thanks in advance! 😊

Hello 🙋

My rats love to find their food. In the cage I would scatter the lining less, that is too easy 🙈 I have 7 digging boxes with clay balls, fleece strips, earth, corn granules, hemp litter and paper flakes. There I sprinkle feed in (partly for several days) and they buddy, seek and lovingly make everything dirty 🥲

Toilet paper rolls can be coated with flour glue and also put in lining.

Intelligence toys made of wood, plastic are also good to use (you can also make yourself).

Feeding trees for fresh food, Pakours (which you go through with tasty), tricks are also good employment opportunities.

Unfortunately, a lot is broken after a short time.

A hammock for hanging (above on a chain) can be made of round, metal-coated flower ampules (available with green lacquering in the building market) lined with fluffy fabric residues. However, it is also possible to use the brown felt material provided for this purpose.

Otherwise, a large wooden wheel must not be missing.

The impeller must be so large that they don't have a crumble back when running, then it's right.

The same as Hamster also applies to rats 😉

It has to be big enough. In trade, however, they cost around 40 euros.

For this, the impeller must have an inner diameter of 50 cm. And because rats are such smart animals they will run less without a target in a wheel. Except there is not enough employment there or the cage is too small.

From old toilet papers or kitchen rolls you can make delicious rolls.

If you still have those of the old fabric masks, from the beginning of the pandemic, they are great hammocks for rats and mice.

Or you braided hay coarsely to a mat and wrap up licks there.

You can put fresh food on a cotton cord, and sprinkle dry food in the goat instead of in a bowl.
