Is this how d-ticket works?

Hello,

If you have a d-ticket, can you just get on and travel on any train that you can use with it, i.e. all trains except IC(E)?

In individual cases, IC(E) also belong to local transport. Simply filter for example on bahn.de by “only local transport”. However, note that the ticket is valid only occasionally abroad. Somewhere on the web site are the terms and conditions, such details stand.

In addition, the passenger rights are restricted because particularly cheap tickets.

Yes, except for long-distance traffic. In addition to IC/ICE, there are also other trains which include e.g. EC, FlixTrain, Thalys, night trains…

Of course, tickets work like that.

Not quite. There are a few routes that are to be visited with the RE but are considered to be long-distance and therefore cannot be used with the German ticket

on the other hand there are few ICs that can also be used with the German ticket
