A free domain is likely to be difficult. You’ll probably find subdomains somewhere.
There are also own domains for not much money. How does a .de domain cost INWX in the first year 5,97€ and in all other years 4,65€.
In the first year there is a .shop domain for 1,79€ or a .xyz domain for 2,13€. From the 2nd year it will be more expensive here.
Various domains such as .space, .site, .online are also available as promo (only first year) for € 1.19.
Very short domains, i.e. under 4 characters (+ ending) you will find only hard as most are already occupied. If you find them, they will not have any meaningful connection. I’d rather take a few more letters and take a domain that you and others can remember and write.
Domains with 3 or less could be very expensive (1000€+) due to the very short length.
For example, ad1.fun is currently free and costs only € 1.19 in the first year. Since the domain has a number, it does not fall under the more expensive premium domains.
With your own domain you have the free choice for Subdomain, provided that the DNS records are set. If a second website comes, you can create another subdomain without extra costs. The second website could be on 1.ad1.fun.
Even if it is not free, the prices for selected domain extensions are very low (e.g. € 1.19 for a whole year). The payment at INWX also runs via prepayment, so that the domain expires automatically without timely payment.
If you want to have the same domain for several years, I would choose a .de domain.
