Question about BluRay Player Sony BDP S300?

Could one

Is it possible to upgrade an old player that doesn't support modern sound formats? For example, chip tuning or replacement?

With the Bluray Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master came to the home cinema market. Thus, all Bluray players should support these formats. If you may mean Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Auro3D, they will also be supported because True HD and HD Master are also used as carrier formats.

These audio formats are simply forwarded to the output device in bitstream 1:1 without being processed.

As already written in the player’s menu, see if the sound output is set to bitstream. There are also other modes that pass the sound either as PCM or even as Dolby Digital 5.1.

Okay, your player seems really too old to support the codecs. The technical data is only available with Dolby Digital and normal DTS Yes, with HD formats No.

What’s the name of the player, then I’ll look in the guide.
