It depends on what you have for goals. But I would try it so soon. Even after the Abi training is possible and do not study compulsory 😉

You have to know what you want…

When you get the Abitur from principle because you from principle necessarily wants to study, then simply because of a lack of concrete goals, something begins to study, then another course of study starts again, then still finds that the study is somehow less cool than thought and at the end with 25 then a 3-year vocational training begins, the Abitur was actually rather pointless. With medium maturity you would have come as far as possible, only much faster and more stress-free.

And as people usually don’t want to be guilty, those who have been through this path will also tell everyone that the Abitur is stupid and guilty of everything.

If, on the other hand, one has specific objectives that require the Abitur, for example because one seeks a profession for which one must study (article, lawyer, engineer…), then one cannot call the Abitur useless in the best will. It is not really alternative, but the simplest and most direct way to study.

Even if you simply didn’t have a concrete professional idea with 16 and simply started the Abitur to shin time, it can be absolutely sensible and rewarding! Because the goal of winning another 2-3 years to decide for an education is fully achieved. You just can’t start thinking about if you really needed the Abitur for the training you’re doing. Because that was not the purpose for which you did the Abitur.

As for the question “how far does one come in life”:

  1. What is “to come” has different ideas. No, not everyone defines their life goals through annual income.
  2. There are many ways to Rome. For example, as a craftsman with his own company you can earn quite well.
  3. There are no self-runners. Just for doing an exam and studying, you don’t get any more money and no better jobs. You have to have studied something meaningful and look for jobs.

So, if you hate the school and your grades are grayish or you know 100% what you want to do, it can sometimes be more sensible to go with the real school degree and look for an education.

But if you’re okay/good at school and don’t even know what you want to do, there’s no reason to do an Abitur.

Better than not have. Many of them do an apprenticeship after graduation. After that you can still decide to study.

whether this is really worth it.

What is the alternative?
Cancel school and hope for the rest of life for civil money?

and have heard from friends that this is no longer worth it

Then you should check your circle critically.
In certain, usually rather remote layers, the rejection of the Western system of values seems to be quite great in fashion.
