Foreign SIM card not recognized?

I was abroad in the EU last year. I bought a SIM card. Unfortunately, it didn't work. It said something like "this SIM card isn't supported for me." It worked for everyone else, though.

Starting tomorrow, I'll be back in the EU and would like to buy another SIM card. It would be great if it worked this time, though. I'm not exactly comfortable asking for hotspots all the time.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I have an iPhone 12.

One way would be, for example, Simlock in the mobile phone

Nö, Simlock hasn’t been there since 2016. At least in Germany. In Austria or Switzerland this can look different.

But the FS would have to write this to us.
