For example, can depressed people invent such sophisticated machines—or not—and why? What do you think?

eg Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Cybersecurity.

In my opinion, depressed people have a more restricted life because of lack of motivation, worse mood and even mental performance, usually a relatively great sense of meaninglessness, etc.

I would be very grateful for a detailed explanation from you.

Why are you interested in this? Specifically, whether you can create such inventions while suffering from depression? Do you need this for school or university?

First, a person has to have the appropriate qualifications. The majority of the population doesn't have a university degree, which would enable them to invent something like this. That's a basic prerequisite.

The next thing to note is that you can't lump all depressives together. There are mild, moderate, and severe depressions. Some depressives only have a single depressive episode lasting a few weeks and are then free of symptoms for the rest of their lives. In my opinion, these people don't count as such, except during their depression. However, in your question, you're only asking about depression. But they are no longer such once the depression has subsided.
People who are currently suffering from severe depression, who are unable to even cope with everyday life and often struggle to get out of bed, certainly cannot work and achieve such a high level of performance. They are definitely out of the question.

Then again, every depression is unique. There are a multitude of possible symptoms. Of the so-called primary symptoms, at least two of the three must be present for a diagnosis. In addition, there are many possible secondary symptoms. At least two of these must also be present. This makes it possible for people who all have depression to still have different (secondary) symptoms.

Key symptoms related to your question include lack of motivation, rapid fatigue, exhaustion, sleep disturbances, and all kinds of cognitive impairments such as difficulty concentrating, memory loss, etc. So, depending on how a person experiences their depression in each individual case, it may or may not be possible. Especially with mild depression, I can imagine that one can still be productive and successful.
You also have to consider that in Germany alone, approximately 5.3 million people are currently suffering from depression. Many of them are still employed and productive. Many of them don't even show that they're ill.

In my opinion, depressed people have a more restricted life because of lack of motivation, worse mood and even mental performance, usually a relatively great sense of meaninglessness, etc.

People with depression don't suffer from a bad mood, but rather from a depressed mood. A bad mood is something that healthy people also experience from time to time.

Absolutely.

I would agree with the quote in the question and that doesn't make it any easier, but it is still possible.

I would say that despite difficult times, I have achieved things that I never expected before.

I find that, especially when things get dry and technical, it's easier to push other problems aside.

Why am I the only one with others?

Okay: here's my opinion.

I think it depends, first of all, on the severity of the depression and the type of person. Not all people are equally artistic, and not all depressed people are equally sad.

Some see work and invention as a way to vent their anger and hatred! Others don't care at all.

Being depressed doesn't automatically make you smarter. Being a mother doesn't automatically make you grown up, and working doesn't necessarily make you rich. It all depends on the person, their personality, and their general circumstances. Sure, there are some who are very smart, but there are others who aren't and prefer to live out their depression.

Yep, and not being depressed doesn't automatically make you smarter. Having no pimples doesn't automatically make you pretty either 😉

Depressives, or psychos in general, have a different way of thinking and perspective than normal people. Many (not all) are very creative and act as artists, for example.

edit:

I mean that in a positive sense, of course. Don't let any misunderstandings arise now………;-)

No, they don't!

You may be a little more emotional, empathetic and vulnerable because of your illness!

The fact that you call mentally ill people psychos draws negative conclusions about you, your behavior, your conduct and your intelligence.

Do you consider yourself a self-proclaimed “normal person” when you make such statements?

My condolences!

Yes, they do! How do I know this? From my own experience….

I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

I refer to myself and other mentally ill people as "psychos" because it has negative connotations. For example, homosexual people used to be called gay/lesbian, or people of color were called n***ers. Only after these people started calling themselves their own swear words did the swear word itself become ridiculous. It works, believe me.

As you can probably see now, I like being a psycho myself and I find normal people boring and "stupid"😜.

Greetings, female internet rambo.

Oh, my answer disappeared…so again:

hello again!

I was just lucky that it was just a misunderstanding……;-)

I really liked your answer, though. That's exactly what you should say to someone who treats or refers to mentally ill people in a derogatory way. Very good, stay the way you are! 👍

a little more emotional, empathetic and vulnerable

That's why I think that "psychos" have a different perspective and are therefore capable of creating something special and extraordinary.

hello again!

Yes, I quickly realized that it's better not to mess with you. I was really lucky that it was just a misunderstanding… 😉

I still liked your comment on my answer. It's just right for someone who disparages mentally ill people. 👍 Keep it up, I admire it! I hope you weren't too upset with me at first.

That's why I think we "psychos" have a different way of thinking and can definitely create something special and extraordinary.

Greetings back! I'm not just a female internet rambo, I'm a "Rambo" in other ways too. Mess with me, and you'll know why! Good, right? 😇

However, one is also mentally ill if one is not suffering from a loss of reality, delusions, limitations of thinking and emotional chaos, but from depression, the symptoms of which are completely different.

Of course it is possible

Depression doesn't mean that you can't achieve anything.

It generally just means that you are not as resilient and that you tend to leave unimportant things aside.

Depressed people are sick, not retarded!

The only limitation in such a case is that everything may “run” a little slower.

Weebmania

Because depressed people carry hatred within themselves which they can eventually live out by achieving their goal

Like Greta Thunberg, for example, she also entered this climate shit through depression, so she could easily talk to politicians on equal terms in the same room without getting nervous.

Depressed people do not carry hate within them!

At most, they are permanently stressed by their illness, but not hateful.

This can be individual, maybe it wasn't like that for you. I was severely depressed for a very long time.

I have suffered from depression for more than half my life and have been diagnosed with it several times.

You cannot diagnose depression yourself.

Ramboline

So you didn’t have a medical diagnosis?!

Believe it or not, after years of depression, I managed to recover from it. With the instructions in this video, I could then heal myself completely.

And what did you do about it?

ReiskocherXL

Of course they can.

Just because a person is depressed does not mean that he or she lacks the necessary knowledge or intelligence.

Yes, I've definitely heard that depressives are supposed to be smarter, but I don't know if that's true.

I know several smart people with depression

Actually, it is more logical, since they are more likely to be exhausted because they take on too much
