The front flaps (slats/leading edge flaps) and the (trailing edge) flaps are extended in all large-scale aircraft. The exact number of folds varies depending on the type of aircraft. Most aircraft patterns have multiple flap positions for the start. Before each start, the cheapest starting position is calculated on the basis of the weather and the conditions of the airport/start train. I picked out some of Airbus’ values.

  • Airbus A330

    • Flaps 1+F : front 16°, back 8°, cross rudder 5° lowered
    • Flaps 2: front 20°, back 14°, transverse rudder 10° lowered
    • Flaps 3: front 23°, rear 22°, transverse rudder 10° lowered
  • Airbus A340

    • Flaps 1+F : front 20°, back 17°, transverse rudder 10° lowered
    • Flaps 2: front 24°, rear 22°, transverse rudder 10° lowered
    • Flaps 3: front 24°, rear 26°, transverse rudder 10° lowered
  • Airbus A380

    • Flaps 1+F : front 20°, back 8°, cross rudder 5° lowered
    • Flaps 2: front 20°, back 17°, cross slide 5° lowered
    • Flaps 3: front 23°, rear 26°, transverse 5° lowered

They are usually the slats at the front edge and the flaps at the rear edge. But just a few degrees! Not fully extended… This increases the critical angle of attack and the maximum possible buoyancy of the profiles with low resistance increase. Angle varies from pattern to pattern. Start is possible with different flap positions, depending on the conditions given grad 😉

Since each airline has different procedures for the different aircraft patterns. Also depends on whether noise protection methods are used or not.

But in principle, the flaps are retracted when the necessary speed has been reached. Exiting of the flaps reduces the minimum flight speed…..it is logically up;)

Yes, they’re not being fully extended.
