F or F sharp oboe?

Hey everyone,

I have now actually decided on the oboe, have had one lesson and over the holidays I have had the task of getting to know the instrument a little.

However, I've forgotten how to play a C major scale; I always end up on F-sharp instead of F. Which key do I need to use to get an F?

If you have any other tips for getting started, please let me know 😉

Thanks for all the answers!

Hello

That’s great that you chose the Oboe! To play the C major ton ladder on the oboe and reach the F instead of the Fis, there is an additional flap you need to operate. The oboe has a so-called “Gabel-F” flap which is used to play the F. To play the C major sound ladder correctly, follow these finger positions:

  1. C (Cis): All fingers below (Gabel-F closed).
  2. D: All fingers below (Gabel-F closed).
  3. E: All fingers below (Gabel-F closed).
  4. Q: All fingers below, but the fork F is opened (usually with the right small finger).

By opening the fork F, you will be able to play the F instead of the Fis. Remember to practice finger positions and air control to create a clear and clean sound. With some exercise you will be able to play the conductors easily. Good luck with your oboe class!
