External macro keys for QWERTY layout?

Hello everyone,

I would like to use German umlauts such as ü,ä,ö and ß on my QWERTY keyboard without any third-party software.

My question is: Can I program the keys and then connect them to computers that, for example, have ENG US keyboards and it will work?

In addition, the external key can then be used immediately on any computer without having to install any specific software beforehand?

Thank you for your answers

I don't know if I understand you correctly… Are you looking for a programmable keyboard or do you want to be able to reprogram any keyboard?

The latter doesn't work. The keyboard's electronics determine which key code it sends when a key is pressed. You can remap this in the operating system… But it only works on that PC. If you plug the keyboard into another PC, it will revert to the default layout.

It's possible that there are programmable keyboards where you program the configuration directly into the keyboard, but they are certainly very expensive.

Remapping keys is relatively easy and is done via the registry. You can create a REG file that you simply run to import it onto a target PC.

If you say something like that exists, you can certainly buy it online. I personally haven't seen anything like that yet. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
