EXR renderings in Unreal Engine appear extremely dark compared to JPG renderings why?

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue rendering images in Unreal Engine and hope someone here can help. When I render my scene in JPG format, the images appear correct (light ratio). However, when I render the same scene in EXR format, the resulting images are extremely dark.

This is the OpenEXR format (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenEXR), which can store significantly more values and also a higher width of values (high dynamic range) as standard images (SDR). More than the three standard color channels (RGB) are also supported.

This does not allow any tool to handle properly! These properties are more useful in order not to lose details during production or to capture extreme values. However, media are mainly viewed on SDR screens and the best printer in the world can no longer start with this than with a good SDR image.
So if you’re the last stop until someone gets the pictures to face, you should limit them to a suitable width of values and image them to SDR. This falls under “Color Grading” and is an important part of post production to achieve the final look.

My recommendation would be the picture in GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/) to load, to set the correct level from there, to quantify the values and to export them as PNG, for example:
