Experience with tendon calcification in horses?
Hello everyone!
Unfortunately, we've been diagnosed with calcification of the deep flexor tendon. I wanted to ask you about your experiences and tips.
Were your horses able to be ridden normally again at some point, and how long did it take? What helped your horses, and did you feed them anything special to support them?
best regards
Shockwave therapy helps many horses very well in this case, and yes, normal riding is often possible again afterwards. It depends on the circumstances—no one here knows the exact circumstances or what other issues the horse may have… Your vet should have suggested treatment options and discussed the next steps and prognosis with you, right?
Moderate exercise is important, no deep ground, and no tight turns. Special feed supplements are a tricky issue. There's a huge market with a huge pile of useless products – or even products that can actually help, but can cause other problems, such as devil's claw (which upsets the stomach). A good and helpful supplement is Magnoflexal or Magnocollagen from iWest, for example – but unfortunately, they're often poorly eaten. You can have some test packs sent to you to see if your horse accepts them.
