More important than water, however, is sodium. “Salt deficiency can be life-threatening,” says Sostmann. Two years ago, a Brit died at the Frankfurt Ironman triathlon, who almost drank to death because he took too much low-sodium water. If the sodium content drops in the blood, the cells will swell in the body. It comes to headaches and nausea, in the worst case it ends fatal.

Hubert Sostmann, Internist and Gastroenterologist at the Kasseler Diakoniekliniken, advises people with cardiovascular and kidney diseases from the water fasting. He also recommends no one who wants to lose weight: “This is a jo-jo-effect.”
