Food tastes bitter, am I the only one who likes it?

Good day,

I'm visiting friends the other day and I had tea and ate a terrine and when I drank the tea it was extremely bitter but not from the tea bag. After that I ate a terrine which tasted normal and then I ate another terrine which tasted bitter again. What is causing this? It can't be from the water because I tried the water as it was and it really only came from these two things. I can't finish the terrine as it is because it has an extremely bitter taste that doesn't go away. What could be causing this? (I'm not sick) or what can I do to suppress the bitterness? Thanks for any answers.
