First car: Looking for a Japanese rear-wheel drive (to learn to drift) for around 5000 euros?
Hello everyone,
I'm currently looking for my first car and have a few requirements and wishes. Perhaps you can give me some good recommendations. 🙂
First, my ideas:
- Budget: Approximately 5,000 euros for the car and an additional 3,000-4,000 euros for tuning (performance, appearance, sound).
- Drive: I prefer rear-wheel drive because I would like to learn drifting.
- Origin: I love Japanese cars, as my dream car is a Mazda RX-7. Therefore, a Japanese car would be my favorite.
- Usage: I often drive long distances (about 30 km of highway between Mönchengladbach and Venlo, 5 times a week). Therefore, the car should not consume too much fuel and be reasonably reliable.
- Seats: A two-seater like the Mazda MX-5 NB is unfortunately out of the question, as I often travel with friends and therefore a 4-seater would be better for me.
My first thought was a Honda Civic because it's easy to tune and fairly reliable. But unfortunately, it's front-wheel drive, so that's out. Now I'm considering whether the Lexus IS 200 might be a good option for me. What do you think of this model? Are there any better alternatives within my budget?
It would also be important to me that the car doesn't have too many kilometers on it, as I will be driving it frequently and want it to last as long as possible.
I look forward to your tips and experiences!
Thank you in advance! 😊
So you want a cheap reliable car, with little running performance, which is also favorable in maintenance. At the same time you want a fun car to drift, specify and do.
It seems to me to be a pretty spade between reason and fun.
I actually have no idea about tuning and drifting, so I’m about as far as you are. I don’t know about car models, so you’re ahead of me. I’d guess, get the information right from the source. Somewhere near you there will certainly be a tuning scene. Get in touch. They can then tell you how much your ideas are compatible with reality. They know which cars are eligible can possibly establish contacts with sellers. Then they can tell you about costs and drifts. If you make friends there, you can also ride with you, get tips/help while doing etc.
In addition, I notice the following:
It sounds like the ovarian wool milk sow.
Little km, only 5,000€(for this you get something halfway okay),backdriver, not much consumption(but you need enough PS to drift),japaner, drifter, 4 sitzer
You are also aware that if you want to drift, at best you can set 2-3 sets into the garage?
You might want to put a little bit on that vehicle. Or you buy a normal car + save something and then get a fun vehicle.
Thank you for your feedback! Yeah, I’m aware that drifting loads tires and the chassis. The car is not used exclusively for drifts, but mainly for everyday life and occasional practice. I am willing to invest money for tuning and maintenance and first wanted to see what is in the budget area. Maybe you still have an idea for a suitable vehicle?
The Lexus IS200 would be the best choice here. He can also have 300tkm. It’s a Toyota.
The other cars are very far away from your budget. Toyota JZX100 Chaser, MkII, Crown, Nissan Cedric, President. There are also Skylines as 4 Doors with RWD. But you’re not going far with 5k.
Possibly, but only with automatic, you will find vlt nen Infinity G35. There would be in Japan as a skyline and you could do a little bit of bargain. But then the shipping comes to
Thanks for the information. What do I have to look for if I’m looking for an IS200? I actually had a filter for up to 150,000 KM in it, but if you say he goes with 300,000 KM, I’ll change it.
Good care is important. A well-maintained japaner rides with 300,000km even Astrein during a completely without care and after 80,000km the grätsche makes.
problems rust, valve cover seal, blind headlight, crossbar, play in the drive shaft

In fact, the IS200 is not that bad idea. Like all Lexus the quality is true, even very high mileage levels are not a problem, the car is reliable and the 155 hp (with only 1360 kg empty weight), connected to the 6-speed hand circuit are sufficient for drifting.
I had an IS200 myself. This car was a good experience. They are traded cheaper in Germany than with us in Switzerland.

You’re looking for the edifying wool milk sow. The used car market is completely in the bucket, the classic Japanese JDM-Cars have been looking for collection pieces for years with corresponding prices, and drifts are extremely burdening drivetrain and chassis.
IS200 gives for the money as quite sluggish diesel with at least 200k km up, which will hardly be.
Saving Japanese give for money, but drift vehicles?
Thank you for the information! Yes, the used car market is really difficult at the moment. I realize that real JDM icons are expensive, but I’m not looking for a collector’s item, but something that could move in my budget and be fun with tuning. The IS 200 would be a way for me, even if I see that many models have quite many kilometers. Maybe you know alternatives with a rear drive?
I’d do 8000 Eu, don’t do, and I’d be happy if the car goes well.
Drifting is ok on closed pitches, everything else is irresponsible, especially as a starter.
Think about the plans.
Do you have any recommendations for the price class?
Of course I just want to learn to drift on drifting lines, I thought that was clear.
I’m not a professional. I generally find Japanese a good idea. Have you learned someone in the circle of friends who screwed himself, car mechanics or the like? I would go about such mates in the case, especially with those looking for models they know themselves.
