For many, “WLAN” is synonymous with the local Internet connection. You mean therefore presumably mobile USB scripts that connect the internet via the mobile network. These surfsticks have clearly come out of fashion. With 5G standard, they are hardly available or they are very expensive.

If you don’t want to connect the internet to your home via DSL, fiber optic or TV cable, you’ll best use a mobile radio router (frequently called Homespot). For simple testing, however, the hotspot function of a mobile phone is sufficient.

Yes, there is Surfsticks. I used to, so until 2020, I used one on my Windows 7 laptop. All right.

But then I bought a PC with Windows 11 on it, and the surfstick didn’t work a bit. Windows 10 is the same.

Up to Windows 8(.1) they worked easily.

In fact, I’ve read somewhere that Microsoft has ended the support of surfsticks, as it is said that less and less people use them.

Today there are still

  • Wlan (=wireless),
  • and Ethernet/Lane(= wired);

Mobility has disappeared and also a little simplicity:

It used to be so easy: SIM in Surfstick, and then via USB in PC or laptop, and you already have internet.

At Wlan you have to look around and wait for your own Wlan router to show up, and he does that very rarely. Often I have to start the search 2-3 times until it appears in the search list. It’s annoying.

If it would work, I would still use surfstick myself today, but apparently no one fits in the stuff… I’d love to put back these uncomplicated surfsticks…
