Learned dance exercises don’t work in reality?
Hello, I'm feeling a bit desperate. I've already taken several Bachata classes, attended workshops, and I'm also learning dance steps online. Whenever I dance freely, I can't quite pull off what I've learned, even the simplest dance steps, like a cross-body lead. I feel like my partner is totally surprised and doesn't understand what I'm trying to do. I'm slowly getting the feeling that dancing only works when two people have fully rehearsed dance combinations. On the other hand, I see dozens of couples dancing freely while it works. What am I doing wrong, or am I just too stupid for it?
Are you talking about Salsa or Bachtata? The Cross Body Lead is salsa. This is usually danced to the front and back, while Bachata is sideways and there are other figures. But most importantly, there are two completely different musical styles and dances.
Since you said Cross Body Lead (Salsa):
Then you’re probably not in the Rhtymus. Do you really hear the 1 and find yourself in the Salsa rhythm?
What kind of salsa did you learn? How do you start with the steps?
The Cross Body Lead is danced to 1 (preparing to 1, 2, 3 and leading the partner from 5) LA-Style, to 2 (where you prepare to 5, 6, 7 and bring the partner past 2) New York style, etc.
However, Cuban salsa is often danced. There, the CBL Dile que no is called and it is not danced on line but around itself, in a simplified way.
That means there are several styles. Depends on what you’ve learned and what you’re dancing where you go.
No, I don’t think some learn faster, others slower. Even I am someone who often takes longer to learn new steps and I have always stood at the border to really doubt me if I could not take a step. But as my dance teacher always says, “Exercise makes the Master” and I think that’s true. Maybe you just didn’t get right to the figures, and you might be making mistakes in quite different places where you didn’t notice that it was. Just ask your dance instructors to show you again or dance with dif. From your own experience you get a lot of concrete tips on how to improve yourself again and constructive and encouraging feedback when there are good teachers.
And once again something I would like to say to you: in my opinion, it is worth a lot more if you try and don’t let it go until you have practiced it for as long as you can dance it once and get it right away. Because then there is no great effort and I know that this is still often very frustrating and can also make jealous and sad to see such people, but remember: if you always stick to practicing, get up again and again until you can see the figure, then you know that you really want to dance, really burn for it and then outsiders see it. And you can be much more proud of yourself, because you’ve learned it, even though you often didn’t have it easy. All these other, alleged “natural talents” cannot claim.
You misunderstood me. I can very well learn the dance steps, even in the courses and workshops with participants. But I can’t put her in free dancing. e.g. the simple 1 minute moves from the Bachata Dance Academy (see Youtube), or the one Beginner Partnerwork combination thereof. Dance all possible moves in free dancing, but dancing with something like a box gives problems. I don’t understand, my dancing is too faded, the others didn’t learn that, aren’t they hired if so why? And why can they react sovereignly with all possible moves in their dances and are over assaulted and confused with a box or a cross body lead?
The question is also: are you talking about Salsa or Bachata? I think you’re dancing the wrong style on the wrong song and you can’t just exchange it, see Waltz on Disco Fox. No matter how good you master figures when they’re wrong.
because the women know you learned that and the figure is coming. they would dance the figure even if you didn’t lead. for example, I do this in beginners courses too. Then the man lifts the arm and I turn myself independently – just because he would be overwhelmed anyway. Outside of courses, I wouldn’t turn around. He didn’t give a pulse. Evt is similar to you
please do not dance through videos learning!!! At least in no way as a beginner! Because we already have your basic problem: you’ve learned figures but never got a feedback whether your guidance is clean, whether it comes at the right moment etc. Evt, for example, you stand in the Cross Body Lead and the woman can’t walk where she should. Or the impulse for the figure comes a clock too early or too late, so I would be totally irritated what you want from me now. If a dance teacher were there, you could ask – a good dance teacher would recognize the problem without any questions and intervene in time.
I don’t have to have learned the characters to be able to dance – if the man is doing good….. and if you’re looking for some characters from dance videos, then it can also be that they are not danceable in practice. There are possibly pure show figures where the sequence is trained – the figures could not be easily guided. Then elements of other dances are taken in.
For example, I dance tango Argentino and Bachata – the two dances you can mix well – then you can insert Tango Argentino elements in the Bachata. The dance is really there. Then call Bachatango
Luis et Laetitia – Bachatango – YouTube
But if you don’t recognize this, and then Tango Argentino takes things in the Bachata – then surely the woman would be totally confused too
So bad it sounds – if you don’t just dance with a beginner and the woman doesn’t understand what you want from her – then unfortunately the mistake lies with you with a lot of probability… maybe the next time she doesn’t understand which character she wants to dance. many women like to give you feedback
Hi! Then I would suspect that your leadership of the partner is not correct. The task of the Lord is not only to be able to take his steps, but to have a plan and to clearly signal to the lady by guiding impulses what comes next. This happens, for example, through hands or body position… but this also includes a certain body tension so that it works.
I’d almost bet the rabbit’s in the pepper.
Gruss
Thanks for the answer, this is one of the problems. So I come to the next question, how do you get a plan (then you think of it for a whole 4min song) and how do I signal to a woman by leading impulses what comes next (doesn’t that presume that a foreign dance partner, interpreting the lead impulse itself correctly and even what I learned before)?
No, or it depends. When I think of my dance situations, it was always very crowded so that you had to constantly look at what or what episode is next. In principle, one could only consider the next figure and then apply the necessary guide aids. As for the foreign dance partner: in doubt either start small and look how she reacts or just ask about what level she has. Gruss
then you may take a single hour with a dance teacher – it may be quite simple at your inaccurate leadership. She may not understand what you want from her.
that is definitely not true. In the beginning, it is easier to do because both can then be the same figures. But you’ll never get really good if you’re always dancing with the same person. you don’t need to lead because you’re the poor and your dance partner would turn out on your own.
would you do that with me I’d look you nice – more nice. because I don’t do anything without the impulse. Because Arm can lift up X things because X figures can emerge from them. This means that you have to perform much more precisely with a foreign dance partner.
You men have great advantages – you only lead the figures you can. I just learned to a man of the characters I never learned. As a beginner, you’re totally insecure. You don’t care later. I only learned the basic movements in the end. The rest must lead the man, and I’ll react. If he leads neatly you can dance as a woman also characters you never learned.
but all of this does not go from the beginning – therefore: practice, practice,
but surely dance longer
no only you lack the exercise or the technique – both can be repaired with more/besseren lessons.
My advice: Keep away from online courses/videos… here is none of you corrected and so you learn things wrong. You can use this to look after how the learned figure went again. But learn to dance about videos – no good idea
