Enzyme-substrate equation = substrate amount?

Hello.

There are various factors that influence enzyme activity, such as the amount of substrate. Would that simply be the enzyme-substrate equation, or are they two separate things?

Thanks in advance

Hey!

The enzyme substrate equation (or Michaelis-Menten-Theory) and the substrate quantity are two separate concepts, which are however connected to one another. The enzyme substrate equation describes the relationship between the enzyme activity and the substrate concentration. The amount of substrate refers to the amount of substrate available for the enzyme. It is an influence factor on the enzyme activity, since an increased amount of substrate normally leads to a higher enzyme activity until the enzyme reaches its saturation limit.

Many variables influence various factors of enzyme activity, e.g. substrate quantity, pH, temperature, etc. The enzyme substrate equation is just one way to describe and analyze the relationship between the enzyme activity and the substrate concentration.

There is actually only one important equation that is crucial for the activity of enzymes. This would be the Michaelis-Menten equation. The maximum Enzyme concentration is determined and is NOT defined by the amount of substrate or possibly by inhibition.

The addition of additional substrates when an enzyme has reached its maximum activity is not changed. It can and will not work faster; a lot does not always help much!
