Encrypted SSD does not need to be decrypted?
I encrypted an SSD on my Macbook with a password and then wanted to test whether it was really encrypted. I removed the USB connection and plugged it back in, but it just opened without me having to enter a password.
Is that correct? Does the MacBook recognize the SSD and know that it's been connected before, so it doesn't ask for the password?
Hello,
If you have already connected the hard drive and entered the password, it is possible that the hook “Save password in the keychain” was enabled. You will not be asked for a password again if you connect the hard drive.
If you don’t want to, you can remove the password from your keychain at any time. Open the app keychain access, search the top right in search of your hard disk (name as in the finder), make sure that you have selected all entries or passwords and delete the found entry called your hard disk.
When you plug in your hard drive again, you should be asked for a password again. Then make sure that you get the hook for saving the password.
To see if your hard drive is encrypted, you can also click your hard drive in the Finder with a right-click and select info there. In the information window, you should see APFS (encrypted) as formatting.

It may also be stored that they are known and automatically opened with a stored password. Best regards
