A friend of mine bought the following car radio at a parts store, which, contrary to the seller's claims, unfortunately doesn't play. Upon opening it, I noticed two capacitors (so-called snowmen) that are considered problem capacitors. They say 100/10 at the top, a production number below that I don't know, and 5/65 below that. That must be the year of production. The numbers at the top are probably 100uF and 10V. I need to know if replacing these two capacitors (one in the power supply and one in the radio) will make it play again. My friend paid €125.00 for it. The light is on, and there's a slight humming noise. Unfortunately, despite the antenna being connected, there's no FM reception. It's set to 12V. I hope for some helpful answers. Thanks! 🙂

Press the switch buttons for the bands K/M/L/U (before) All U for FM reception), because due to moisture (long non-use) corrosion forms at the mechanical band switches.

A power supply is available on this radio not, because it is already supplied with DC voltage. A greasy ELKO can only be installed for the audio output stage.

The brooding (50Hz) what you hear is perhaps your own power supply, because it does not provide a clean “battery voltage”, power supplies often supply unsurpassed voltages. In other words, Brummen is disturbing the music enjoyment, but in the car there is no 50Hz Brummen.

No one can tell you what’s broken.

PS:

It might be that someone (Möchtegern-Elektroniker) has “determined” the entire radio reception part, that you will not get back without the manufacturer’s matching instructions.

There are still Glättelkos in there even if it is already supplied with 12vdc from the battery. And they’ll all be over by age. The selector switches and all other mechanical contacts.

No, you never have to smooth.
The ELKO are intended only for decoupling the NF signal.

In the field of HF levels + ZF levels, large ELKOS nix have lost!

The questioner hears nix or has no reception on UKW.

It speaks of power supply and my possibly the audio output stage (it is a second device), this output stage will be connected to the radio.

I guess the radio is ver-bastelt (so HF/ZF reception part is detuned), thus scrap.

The DC voltage in the KFZ is not stable enough and has many disturbing factors. Therefore, the voltage is smoothed in the terminal. Always.

I’m sorry. If that has not been prepared, it will not run well if at all. Such old devices should only be bought if you have the necessary know-how to put them back in motion, especially at the price, the risk is simply too high.

because the contacts of the selector switches will be so severely damaged that it is only a case for the ton. If this is now an antique tube radio worth a few thousand euros, you would make the effort and solder new contacts that you have to make yourself. It’s not worth it here. That’s why the noise is coming.
