Dog only eats chew sticks and nothing else?

My girlfriend's dog doesn't eat any wet or dry food, but only chew sticks of all kinds. She says they're just as good as dry food. However, I don't think they provide him with all the nutrients he needs for a balanced diet. Are there any chew sticks that cover everything a dog needs?

He is a boxer mix and according to the vet, healthy and well-nourished.

So, purely chewing stick diet, who told you that this is great?

It would be the same as if she were to eat Maoam chew sticks all day (oh no, they were called FRITT). Maybe she should do a self-experiment and see how she feels afterward.

A dog will eat anything that is put in front of its snout as long as it does not have dental problems or other issues.

You should give 1-2 chew sticks per week, and they're not a substitute for a complete diet. I also don't think the boxer will thrive on this diet. You should do some tests to see if the values are actually correct.

My dogs (12 and 14 years old) certainly eat the typical wet food in ragout or pâté form every now and then. But I also like to cook chicken, potatoes, carrots, peas, rice, and hearts for them, boiled thoroughly and then pureed and garnished with a little cottage cheese (someone calls it crumbly cheese).

If you're making yourself something to eat, you can also prepare something for your pet at the same time (it hardly takes any time). Frozen food, folks, what's the point of that? We're past the height of summer… Dog ice cream is made from low-fat yogurt (you can also use crumbly cheese), some liverwurst (for dogs), and then treats as a bonus.

Meiner hat auch zumeist eigens für ihn zubereitetes Futter bekommen.

However, the dog will not remain healthy in the long run.

Of course he doesn't eat anything else because he's not hungry when he's been gorging himself on chew sticks all day.

As a human, you just have to be sensible. Then he doesn't get anything until he eats his food, and then he gets a stick. How quickly do you think he learned that he has to eat the food first before he gets something like that?

A diet of chew sticks alone is certainly not healthy. Have you tried offering your dog food in other ways? As a puppy, my dog only ate food from a sniffing mat, an anti-gulp bowl, or intelligence toys during the acclimation period.

For example, you could try freezing dry food with water or simply freezing wet food in an ice tray. You can also experiment to see if there's a food your dog likes.

Gefrorenes Futter macht Bauchschmerzen.

True, thanks for the point. My dog tolerates it quite well (in small amounts in the summer), but there are also more sensitive dogs. (Softened) food in a Kong would certainly be a smarter alternative.

In kleinen Mengen mag das okay sein, das vertragen durchaus viele Hunde. Aber als ganze Mahlzeit ist das sicher keine gute Idee.

When he is hungry he eats anything, if there is nothing else.

Your friend is making her dog sick. And no, there's no chew that covers everything a dog needs.

She should leave out the chew sticks and give him a high-quality wet food. As soon as he gets hungry, he'll eat.

Chew sticks should be used for entertainment and teeth cleaning, but are not a staple food.
