Does studying music make sense?

Hey, I would like to study music (electric bass, jazz performance and/or composition).

I'm currently still at high school, but I've been questioning for a while whether getting a high school diploma is even worth it, because to me it just feels like a waste of time.

Would it make sense to drop out of 11th grade, then take a year or two to prepare for college (I'm currently taking bass lessons, piano lessons, am in a big band, and am taking a jazz theory course), and then probably study here in Germany? (Do you know of any good music colleges here? Outside of Germany, I'd actually find Berklee quite appealing, but that's in the US.)

Is studying music even worth it (for someone who would rather have less money later on but do what they actually enjoy instead of working a 9-to-5 job)? What else should I know before studying music? Do you have any specific experience with this?

I know some top-class musicians who either “end” as a brothless artist or as a music teacher on a fee basis and never come to a green branch. One ended as a seller in a music house; no one would have had to study for that for years. One has packed it, became a sound engineer and is today a producer in the world music sector, but for this he has lived 15 years from his hand in his mouth after studying. I’m sorry, and the cancers are only so far – it’s never recommended or only if you have the certainty that you’ll get orchestral musicians in a fixed position somewhere.

than someone who later prefers little money, but does what he actually likes instead of working in some 9-5

So what sounds nice at first, but as an adult it is no longer a state – especially if you have to pay rent, have a car and have to entertain something else, which is all about it and wants to start family. I’m guessing.

Yeah, so ultimately you have to go the way that feels right for you. It doesn’t make sense to tell you “Students aren’t because this is a broodless art.” If this is your way, you shall go.

I’d do the Abitur in your place. Then you have it in your pocket. And later you can still teach music when all the other knits tear. Or go towards music education. With the Abitur, all the doors will be open later. If you’re destined for it and put everything on a card, you’re unnecessarily under pressure because you don’t have a catch net in doubt to earn your living.

The music business also works via networking. If you know someone who knows someone, etc., so you’re not an unwritten sheet, you’ll be taken into account more than when you get out of nothing. So you can also try to connect to gigs via your big band or concerts. Not every successful musician has studied music. This is surely nice to have, if you are interested in composition and the like, but not everything decisive.
