Does anyone have experience with LEDs?

Hey, I'm 17 and I want to put LEDs in my room, but I want to do it right.

Does anyone have experience with this?

What do you have to pay particular attention to?

What don't you think about?

I would be so happy if you could help me, my budget for this isn't that big because I don't work yet.

I measured my room and I need 13.9 m LEDs

How big is your budget exactly?

There are a few basic rules that always apply:

  1. Stick with one manufacturer! Otherwise, you'll end up with 1,000 remote controls lying around, the right one never being there, and the colors not matching properly.
  2. Don't buy cheap junk.
  3. Ideally (it's a bit more expensive), get something smart. Philips Hue is the gold standard here, but that's already in the triple digits at 14 meters.

Since LED strips always have that "dotted" effect when bare, it's best to stick them somewhere where the strips aren't directly visible, so the lighting is indirect. If you want to achieve more brightness, for example, when installing the strips in a recess, stick aluminum foil underneath them first. It really makes a difference!

With a smart solution, you can also control the lights later with your phone, gaming accessories, smart home, etc., which is a pretty cool feature. Razer and Corsair, for example, have an interaction with Hue, so you can continue the lighting from a game in the room.

It all depends on your concept and what exactly you want to do.

For example, do you just want to install a light tube on the baseboard or should it be indirect lighting on the ceiling?

Should it be hidden in a ledge, or do you not mind the hose being visible? The issue of mounting would be interesting, which, in turn, depends on the room's walls (drywall or stone/concrete).

You can handle the power supply via normal sockets with a transformer in front of them, and control it via an app.

Should the strip, which is almost 14 meters long, be sold in one piece or in shorter lengths? This also makes a big difference in price.

You don't need waterproof LEDs in a normal room. That would only be necessary in damp rooms like bathrooms and possibly basements.

Our own example from our kitchen:

I installed two LED strips and angled aluminum bars in a 3×3.5 meter room with a kind of frosted glass cover, which is half-recessed into the ceiling. The individual LEDs aren't visible there. Power is supplied via two sockets. The color control and on/off are controlled via remote control.

The LEDs were relatively cheap at just under €20 per strip, but the aluminum strips were a good value at almost €200.
