Ask a good local piercer.
This is truly the best source you can get. Many people research risks, etc., in advance, so you can do that, too.
I would recommend you go to a sterile environment and get suitable material.
And of course knowing how it's done, because that's where most people fail.
Personally, I think that you should think twice about some things when you ask yourself "How should I do this correctly" or "which tips could be essential?"
I can only advise you not to pierce it yourself. The pain was devastating, and piercing it definitely requires skill.
