Do you need software development skills to become an AI developer?
I'm studying computer science (second semester) and would like to pursue a career in AI, such as becoming an AI developer. Do I need knowledge of software development, such as software engineering, to become an AI developer? In other words, does it make sense to work as a student employee in software development while studying and taking courses like "Software Engineering II" or "Formal Methods in Software Development" in my master's program if I want to work as an AI developer or something similar later on?

Jokes aside, of course, you need to be able to access the AI's interfaces (APIs) and process the responses accordingly.
Without programming knowledge, it won't work.
