Do you have to know the periodic table by heart?
Over the holidays, our chemistry teacher gave us the task of memorizing the first 20 elements of the periodic table, including atomic numbers and such. Is that normal? It seems completely unnecessary to me; most people are given that in homework, right?
There is a difference between the whole PSE to learn by heart or only first 20 elements to learn.
Nobody learns the whole PSE. Even in a chemistry study, some elements are so rare that they can be checked as needed. The 40-50 elements, which one needs to be regularly, loop in memory.
But the elements with which the basic principles of chemistry are explained in chemistry classes are now roughly the first 20.
And now it is essential to have certain basics in mind. If the chemistry teacher declares that this and that element reacts so and so because of its position in the PSE, then one should know this position as a listener in order to understand the explanation. Otherwise, you have the choice of whether you want to go after and stop listening, or whether you simply don’t get what it is about.
Now we all know how to tick as a student. What do you think, how many pupils remember the most important elements when the teacher says that this is sensible?
If he gives it as an explicit task, he may at least pretend that the students have learned it. And can accordingly make meaningful lessons instead of starting with Adam & Eva at every single explanation.
So yes, it’s normal.
And yes, it is also normal to presume in exams that pupils know “the usual suspects” and do not need any reference.
Hey!
Yeah, we have to. At least if you choose the scientific branch, you have to. I don’t know how it is. I think we have to learn something by heart, but I do.
So yes, that’s normal, and you can also ask about the vacation.
Love
We didn’t have to, deep in the last millennium. And in retrospect, I have to say that we probably would have strangled our teacher if he had asked for such a thing…
It is good if it is not necessary to check for every pup during chemical calculation or determination of the molar mass. 20 learning element is not a thing. One more help: in this area of the PSE, most rounded atomic masses are double the order number. Exceptions: H = 1, then boron, phosphorus, chlorine, argon and potassium.
No, we didn’t have to. The boardwork was allowed to be used in all scientific subjects, and the period system stood directly in the book cover.
So we had to be able to dig it out.
Yeah is normal.
My school time has been very long and yes, we had to learn it by heart.
When did you go to school and where?
I was trained in Hesse in 1967.
Yeah, sure.
Then you remember what a dial phone is.
No, what? It’s in the boardwork.
Everything you learn at school is in some tablework.
Why do you have to make another tea bag?
One more with speech needs. It’s about the period system. Congratulations, if you are able to remember the essential things.
For example, I never have a spit in school – because I never needed it – I’m so crassed.
Did I? I don’t even know what it means.
Hopefully it doesn’t have to be
by my commentary to the psychologist for three years.
Sounds pretty stupid.
