Do I have POTS?

Hello,

I've noticed lately that I get tired quickly, often have headaches, and feel like I'm not really there (I think that's called brain fog?)

I googled it and came across the disease POTS.

I then measured my heart rate, and my resting heart rate while lying down is around 80-90. When I stand up, it immediately rises to 130 and higher and stays above 100.

Could I have POTS, and if so, which doctor can diagnose it?

PS: I don't want any answers that scare people. I'm only 15 😅

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello,

it actually sounds like your symptoms could be related to POTS (postural tachycardia syndrome), especially because your pulse rises so clearly (from 80–90 to over 130) and remains over 100. A strong pulse increase in connection with symptoms such as exhaustion, brain fog and headaches are typical signs.

To clarify this, it would be best if you were looking for a doctor. A cardiologist or neurologist, which knows about autonomous disorders, can carry out a so-called tilt table examination. It looks at how heart rate and blood pressure react when you lie, sit and stand.

A general practitioner can also be a good first contact person. It is important to exclude pre-possible other causes such as iron deficiency, thyroid diseases or vitamin deficiency, as these may cause similar complaints.

Until then, it helps if you care to drink enough (2–3 liters of water a day) and to take enough salt to you. This can support the cycle. Compression stockings and slow up from the lying can also be helpful.

Don’t worry, POTS is burdensome, but there are ways to do better. A lot of success in the clarification!

Do you have little sport? If so, it can be.

Otherwise, hormones of puberty can also be blamed, the body is still in growth and requires a lot of energy for it. There can be headaches and exhaustion.

Talk to your doctor about it, he can examine you, and then you’re certain.
