Difference between implosion bomb and cannon principle bomb?

What was the difference in the construction and function of the "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" nuclear weapons? They both have a different construction and detonation sequence. However, British sources say that both were implosion bombs. So how do the two bomb principles differ?

The difference between an implosion bomb and a cannon principle bomb is how the core cleavage is triggered.

An implosion bomb uses a compression of the core gap bomb to make the core critical. On the other hand, a cannon principle bomb uses a firing mechanism to clamp parts of the core to one another and thus to generate a critical mass.

“Little Boy” and “Fat Man” were both implosion bombs. The difference between them was in the design and the way the split was triggered. Little Boy used U-235, which was compressed with a simple steel shaft. Fat Man, on the other hand, used plutonium-239 and had a more complex, multilayered protective shell.

In addition, the two bombs differed in their ignition and the way they were used. Little Boy was triggered by a single ignition while Fat Man had a multistage ignition. Little Boy was dumped with a bomber while Fat Man was mounted on a pylon under a bomber.

Little Boy wasn’t an implosion bomb, but had a gun design!

The implosion bomb uses a ball made of compact material which is arranged around a core made of split material. This ball is compressed by an external ignition, which causes a rapid and uniform compression of the gap material and thus triggers a core gap.

The cannon principle bomb uses a gun that makes two parts of the fissile material meet in order to trigger a core fission.

“Little Boy” was a uran-based cannon principle bomb thrown on Hiroshima. “Fat Man” was a plutonium-based implosion bomb thrown on Nagasaki.

Little Boy had a GunDesign and you were so sure that she worked that you didn’t test it.
