Can the psychologist simply make a diagnosis?

I've been seeing a psychologist for six months for depression. He's now diagnosed me with borderline personality disorder (F60.31 ICD-10) for a brief assessment. Is he allowed to do that? I mean, I personally see it this way: I certainly have some of those symptoms, but I don't consider myself borderline.

If you meet the criteria, he may. Just as you may object or seek a second opinion.

Sometimes a somewhat premature diagnosis is also written, since the health insurance companies only pay for a longer treatment in the case of an established disease.

Can talk to him about what you’re talking about.

But a therapist can diagnose and also needs it to be able to settle the health insurance.

But a therapist must also be aware of what prejudice this diagnosis has. And if you don’t see yourself as a “Borderliner” okay. You can talk to him.

How can he? That’s his job. And just because it’s been diagnosed, that doesn’t mean that he’s found the last end of wisdom. Of course, you are free to get a second opinion if you doubt it. But apart from that. This assessment is made by the man, but it seems that at the moment it is more of secondary importance than you see. The doctors simply need a sound statement with stressful facts. Because the problem with mental illnesses is also that those affected are simply not aware of the fact that they are actually sick. Thus, only as an example, a predominant part of the people the two bottles of schnapps on the day would probably be disgusting to be alcoholic.

I think he has to do this and also to know how best to proceed further

Each diagnosis has certain criteria that must be met.

If these criteria are met, the doctor may make the diagnosis.

Just ask him what criteria are fulfilled for you to be able to ask this diagnosis

The main symptoms of a Borderline Personality Disorder include:

  • uncertainty and impulsivity
  • Feeling towers
  • Self-infringement and suicide attempts
  • pronounced black-and-white thinking (e.g. fluctuation between idealization and degradation of fellow human beings)
  • sustained anger and aggressiveness
  • Paranoids or Dissociative Symptoms
  • Difficulties in building stable relationships
  • Fear of proximity paired with fear of abandonment
  • frequent feeling of emptiness

Why shouldn’t he be allowed? Depression was also diagnosed.
This is part of his career as a psychotherapist.

If you see that differently, you can talk to him and let you explain why he made the diagnosis.

The psychologist hasn’t known you since yesterday. And that’s why you think of asking “just like that”? He’s been treating you for over half a year and can probably guess that better than you.

P.S. You go there. I don’t think you can go to the doctor and ask yourself any self-diagnosis just because you’ve been to the doctor.

A psychological psychotherapist can make a diagnosis (I assume that you have also done some tests).

“Only” a psychologist (without the qualification of a psychotherapist) must not provide a diagnosis.
