Counterfeit money / counterfeiting?
I've never thought about it, but I actually think there's very little counterfeit money circulating in Germany. I don't know how it is in other countries, but I haven't held counterfeit money in years. How come this seems to happen very rarely in Germany (apart from salespeople checking bills), when there are so many counterfeiters around? It's actually pretty crazy.
Let me say that: You’ve never been aware of false money in your hand, there are fakes that are only recognizable with great effort as such …
On the other hand, the security features of the banknotes are so demanding that their imitation is complicated, which simply limits the amount of counterfeiting.
Yeah, well, again… really scary
In fact, in comparison to the actual cash circulation in Germany, little falsifikate is circulated. And that has been the case for decades. The changes always take place at a low overall level. Currently we have statistically 5 wrong banknotes on 10,000 inhabitants per year. The probability that you will ever get a wrong banknote in your life is therefore comparatively low. Here is a link to the press release of the Deutsche Bundesbank on the figures for the first half of 2022.

The possibilities to spend large amounts of cash are no longer so numerous. Especially in the last two years there are no Christmas markets and folk festivals – these are just typical cash shops.

And this is also more or less the reason why one as a private person rarely has false money in hand. Apparently, they’re discovered very quickly and pulled out of the traffic.
But don’t make any false hopes, there’s enough false money in circulation. I only had one in my hand, but at 2 € coins, everyone will have had a coin in the purse. I have fake coins more often in my hand.
