So don’t know if it’s a blasphemy, but…

one builds up a side character in such a way that it is inappropriate to the protagonist of the book and there is virtually a rivalry. Shortly before the end, however, these “rivals” will give a profound insight into his breaking life, so that one gets pity with him. And while this feeling of compassion builds up and its maximum reaches the character is killed by actions of the protagonist by chance. When you look back, you should realize that the rival was never evil.
