Convertible for computer science studies? Or laptop + tablet?

Hey guys, I'm studying computer science and would like some reviews and opinions. Direct product recommendations aren't necessary, but they're welcome 🙂 I'm giving it a lot of thought because I want to make a long-term investment.

I need to get a new laptop anyway, since my current one is incredibly old and partially broken. I'm relatively flexible when it comes to price; my absolute pain threshold is €1,400. Since I want to study paperlessly, I'd need something for, first, taking notes, and second, for programming, etc.

I'm seriously considering getting a convertible, one of those 2-in-1 things that can be used as a laptop and tablet simultaneously. However, I'm not sure, as I've heard the battery life is terrible and typing on it is equally ungodly.

The alternative would be to get a separate laptop and tablet. I'm happy with iPhones myself and would find an iPad very attractive in that case. A MacBook from Apple would obviously make sense, but the two would be too expensive for me. Besides, I haven't heard anything good about MacOS for computer science studies. So, I'd have iOS on my iPad and Windows/Linux on my laptop. Is that really inconvenient…?

Maybe I'm thinking too much, but I'd like to hear about your experiences and what you use (or have used) in your studies.

I can recommend a laptop and an Android tablet.

As a laptop, for example, I would recommend this: https://www.galaxus.de/s1/product/lenovo-ideapad-slim-3-15abr8-1560-amd-ryzen-7-7730u-16-gb-1000-gb-de-notebook-37781618?utm_campaign=organicshopping&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic Windows 11 is on this. Students and students get Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Onenote free as Office 365 Education license.

As a tablet I can recommend: Commission This is Chromebook and tablet in one. You can also install Android apps. You can run multiple Android apps simultaneously. There is also a handwriting recognition. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Onenote are also available as an Android app. As a student, you get this as an Office 365 Education license for free. An input pin is included. The keyboard can be removed.

The free Office 365 Education license for students and students is available for up to 5 devices. Whether PC, laptop, Mac, iOs and Android devices. Chromebooks are also among the Android devices.

Thus they are at approx. 1100 euros for both together.

For programming, you can easily install Visual Studio on Windows. This is also available as a free community version. The compilers and build tools are right there. https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/en/vs/community/

I knew pupils from the upper level who made absolutely everything (except for exams) on iPad. Where’s the problem?

They’ve done housework with zig pages, including source organization and formatting, on a 11″ screen? Ggf. program code written?

This is certainly not fun;)

Since I want to study paperless

I’ll say: Reduction of paper is possible 😉 without.

I’m really thinking about getting a convertible, so these 2-in-1 parts that you can use as a laptop and tablet at the same time. However, I am not sure, as I have heard that the battery life would be bad and writing on it would also be godless.

I did my master’s degree on an HP Envy x360 Convertible. I also needed handcuffed notes (chemical structural formulas), but also normal research/tipping/organize with keyboard and mouse. And I simply had no money for two devices.

The battery has always brought me over the day. More than 8 h a piece you never work… And if you don’t mind, you hang the thing over the lunch break to the power, or you sit in between for a lecture in a range of a socket and is good.

Writing with the pen is actually in need of reconciliation. Especially if the sensitivity of the pen and screen has not yet been adjusted to fit. But it’s okay. Tip: Do not try to write small. It’s better to zoom a little bit, write big and then zoom out.

I don’t have a comparison to the tablet about the writing. It was sometimes annoying that the Convertible in tablet mode is so thick. For long writing work, I was looking for an extra forearm cover, which was then much more pleasant. For this purpose, it can also rest on the upstanding back rest of the front seat without the hand being bent on the screen.

Something clumsy: The original power supply is very nice to take with it. A separately purchased USB quick charger with good USB C cable takes much less space in the pocket. The Envy x360 also takes power delivery.

I tend to convertible. However, if they are deaf, they are not cheap!

What speaks for me against notebook/tablet: to drag more! The circumstance to change quickly when editing a file becomes very quickly annoying. (Even if such a file is in a cloud).

Especially in computer science, you have a lot to do with special characters – this is going to be quite complicated with a screen keyboard! In my eyes, the tablet is nice to “consume” but hardly suitable to create or edit things. With one exception: Graphic work with pen control! And then I love the Convertible!

I had a Lenovo X220 tablet for similar purposes and was very satisfied with the battery life.

I’d buy something like that. EIn Lenovo Thinkpad X1 should be below €400. I think an X220t can still be used, which should be significantly cheaper. (new battery buy 🙂
