Connect a fast Fritzbox 7583 or a slightly slower 4040 to a copper line with 95Mbit/s?
Hello everyone,
Our internet connection at home only provides 95Mbit/s download and 32Mbit/s upload.
However, we still have a router from our previous apartment that's significantly faster. To be precise, a Fritzbox 7583 with, I believe, up to 1733 Mbps. We also have a Fritzbox 4040 with a maximum speed of 866 Mbps.
Now the question is which one we should connect in the new apartment. Does the faster Fritzbox have any advantages, or would the smaller one perhaps even be better (e.g., due to power consumption)?
Best regards, Gianna and thank you for reading!
A faster router won't do you any good here. It's like driving downtown… if everyone else is doing 50, you can't go any faster, even if your car is theoretically capable of seven times that speed…
Just keep in mind! The 4040 doesn't have a modem! So, if you have a connection with its own modem or converter, etc., you'll have to pay attention to which socket you use when connecting. The 7590, for example, has a "WAN" socket, and the 7583 should have one as well. If not, LAN1 on the interface can be used as the internet connection. This must be configured accordingly.
Greetings, Anna
If you have a download speed of up to 100 Mbit/s, you can only use the FritzBox 4040 if you also use an external modem, as the FritzBox 4040 does not have a DSL modem.
If you don't have an external modem, you have to use the 7583, otherwise it won't work at all.
Tip 1: If you want more download speed, you can switch your tariff from VDSL Vectoring (download max. 100 Mbit/s) to VDSL Supervectoring (download max. 250 Mbit/s), only if your provider offers Supervectoring at your home.
Tip 2: You can even run both FritzBoxes on the same network, as the FritzBox 7583 and 4040 support mesh Wi-Fi. This will give you greater Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. Mesh repeaters (=4040) are useful for larger apartments or those with multiple floors. I recommend connecting the FritzBox 4040 to your network via LAN cable (as a mesh repeater). Only then will mesh repeaters achieve maximum speeds in mesh Wi-Fi. Wireless connection is also an alternative, but the maximum Wi-Fi speed will suffer on the mesh repeater (=4040).
Comparison of technical data:
https://www.router-faq.de/?id=routervg&hwf1=fb7583&hwf2=fb4040
This is how a Wi-Fi mesh is created:
https://avm.de/service/wissenskatalog/dok/FRITZ-Box-4040/3354_FRITZ-Box-als-Mesh-Repeater-einrichten/
PS:
Only operate a second FritzBox in the mesh if the apartment is large or has two floors, because an unnecessary WLAN mesh repeater is counterproductive if the WLAN coverage of the router (7583) is sufficient.
Good luck!
For the 4040, you also need a modem. It doesn't support ADSL or VDSL. It's usually used behind a cable modem.
The 7583, on the other hand, already has a modem for VDSL built in.
When you move, your connection line also changes, and this determines which modem you need.
Hi,
Since the FB 4040 does not have a built-in modem, my choice would be the 7583.
Best regards, Torsten S.
The maximum possible Wi-Fi speed has nothing to do with the maximum possible connection speed. Use 7583.
-Oh yes, the 4040 is only intended for connection to an existing modem, so that's out of the question anyway.
The two certainly have more than just a difference in speed
There are certainly functional differences.
So just compare and see what suits you better.
