Chisinau, Moldova – how safe is it there?
Hey community!
I have a longer trip coming up soon and have planned a stopover in Chisinau, Moldova, with an overnight stay. (I thought it would be interesting to see Eastern Europe "in its purest form")
The next day we continue by plane.
To be honest, I haven't given Moldova much thought until now. Sure, it's not an EU country and a very poor country, but what's the crime situation like there?
I wanted to explore the city a bit. Is that possible without any problems, even if I stand out as a foreigner (speak German, have a "typically German look," etc.)?
I don't have anything exotic planned, I just want to see the city center.
I wanted to use public transportation. Is that advisable? I've heard that taxis charge foreigners incredibly high prices.
Does anyone here have any information on what I should be on the lookout for? Of course, as a city dweller in Germany, I'm aware that you have to watch your bags.
Still, to be honest, I have little desire to have my wallet or backpack stolen or snatched from my hands there. Unfortunately, I can't assess the situation on the ground.
I'm always open to suggestions for sights and recommendations!
Many thanks and kind regards
I was in front of Corona for a week with a tour in Moldova. All nights were in the centre of Chișinău in a modern hotel. From there daily bus trips went star-shaped to all parts of the country. In the hotel as well as in the restaurants all employees spoke English.
Very nice for photographs is the cathedral right in the center https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathedrale_der_Geburt_des_Herrn_(Chi%C8%99in%C4%83u) This is followed by beautiful parking facilities with free Wi-Fi and parking bench outlets in order to be able to charge your mobile phone for free.
These free power connections are used by the street musicians in the evening and so I found, the music sounded much better. I walked through the parks every night to listen to the music of the various musicians.
At the edge of the capital I found the wooden church with village museum https://de.dreamstime.com/holzkirche-im-dorfmuseum-chisinau-moldova-ndash-der-annahme-des-gesegneten-jungfernm%C3%A4rchens-ethnographic-museum-einem-image254071304
Moldova is more digital than Germany. With all the sights, you only have to keep your handi on the corresponding symbol and you already get all the important information to read on your device.
Except in Transnistria, I felt completely safe during the round trip. Pocket theft can of course always happen everywhere. There was only one place where the tour guide said we should be careful here as tourists that we would not be robbed and that was in the Roma settlement https://de.euronews.com/2020/11/03/released-roma-villen-in-moldawien in Soroca. At that time, however, the high maintenance costs, which were then new, could no longer afford. Soroca has a small, interesting castle complex.
Table wine is extremely cheap and there is a wine swam, because it was sold earlier to the entire USSR. Walnut dishes are also a local specialty.
wishes an interesting holiday.
Evening!
Wow, thank you for the very detailed answer!
Now I’m calmed and I think I can travel there with a safe feeling. Sure, I don’t have to travel to Transnistria… that would be too risky to me because of the current situation.
Then I’ll make it so that I book a hotel in the city centre from which I can explore the city on foot. I’ll take a look at the destinations. I will avoid taxis and drive by public transport. Even if the one or the other realizes that I am a tourist and therefore demands a higher price, that is enrichable. Mainly, you don’t have to worry about going to the street after 18:00.
Greetings and all the best!
I was partly alone until midnight in the beautiful parks. It was 2019 that the economic miracle was over and people were very positive. I found the live music so great. In the meantime, I bought in the small supermarkets, because everything is excellent with prices. I prefer to know what I have to pay. Except for the rustic wooden church, everything is in the center and the city center is small. There was even relocated headstone plaster. I was on foot there after the official program.
I’m still excited about how kind everything was there. Have fun on holiday.
Moldavia is famous for cutting high quality custom suits. Of course, that’s not done in a day. You’d have to send the suit to you. We were there a week, there would have been enough time.
