With main group elements, this is quite simple.

Metals they have always positive Charges in metal-non-metal compounds. They give Electrons. They’re oxidized.

Non-metals have always been negative Charges in metal-non-metal compounds. (External hydrogen, which is usually simply positively charged).

The size of the charge corresponds to the main group number of metals. For example, Mg is in the II main group and is therefore charged in compounds 2+. Sodium is accordingly 1+ or simply + charged.

Take non-metals Electronics in responses on. You will reduced. They take up so many electrons until they have 8 electrons in the outer “electron shell”. This means their charge = main group number – 8. For example, oxygen O is in the VI. Main group. Charge is therefore 6-8 =-2.

The charges are… +1, +3, -/+4, -3, -2, -1, 0.
