This is a redox reaction. The iron(Fe) emits three electrons and is oxidized to the Fe3 ion. The Cu 2+ ions each take up two electrons and are thus reduced to elemental copper(Cu). Oxidations can also take place without oxygen, as in this case.

The first equation is the partial reaction is the oxidation where the iron emits its electrons.

The second is the reduction where the copper ion takes up the electrons from the iron.
