Cause of cold start problems with the 1.6 TDI CAYE?

My 1.6 TDI is currently starting very poorly. The outside temperature is around 5 degrees Celsius. The engine has about 180,000 km on the clock.

It starts right away after preheating without any long chugging, but after about a second, it begins to stutter loudly. It refuses to respond to the accelerator at all and then dies after a short time. After 2-3 attempts to start it and with my foot on the accelerator, it finally recovers and runs as if nothing had happened. All subsequent attempts to start it work without any problems.

What could be the cause? I checked it with a handheld tester, and there are no errors listed. The fuel filter is new.

Sounds like it's dirty. Do you drive it a lot for short trips, or have you driven it with premium diesel for a while?

Otherwise, hook it up to the tester when it starts, or have it checked at a garage. There could be several causes. The air intake manifold (MAF) could be one of them, but it might be stored in the error log if it's burned out.

I'm not surprised, the diesel is leaking. Take it to the garage, have it tested, and then they should be able to tell you how much it's going to cost you.

We also call this "sulky", which often happens when diesels are used almost exclusively for short journeys and are not driven over 100 or 200km at least once a month.

That's what happens in this case, and of course, there could be other causes, but I'd have to test the car or inspect it. Unfortunately, I borrowed my crystal ball and can't get it back 😉
