You have the original price, we call it x.

* 0.9 * 0.95 is the new price after both reductions.

x – x * 0.9 * 0.95 is the total discount.

So x – x * 0,855 = 43,36

0,145 x = 43,36

x = 43,36 / 0.145 = 299,03…

The difference of 3ct is that the amount 43,36 was rounded.

You can count it differently:

The article was reduced from 100% to 90% and then to 95%. This is a reduction of 0.9*0.95, i.e. 0.855, i.e. 85.5%. The discount is thus a total of 14.5%.

Now you know that 14.5% is exactly 43.36 euros. This means you have the percentage of 14.5, the percentage of 43.36 euros and you have to calculate the basic value.

Since the basic value = (percentage value/percentage rate ) * 100 is, here:

Basic value = (43,36 / 14.5 ) * 100 = 299,03

Again: the three cents come from the round at 43.36.

It is crucial to calculate the discount correctly.

I would multiply 0.9 (=90 %= -10 %) again with 0.95 (=95 %= -5 %).

This results in 0.855 (=8.5%=-14.5%). So this is the overall discount!

43,36 € ÷ 0,145 (=14,5 %) = 299,03 €

You have to calculate 5% of 43.36, add it and hit 10% from the sum.
