Can MS DOS programs be converted to Windows 10?

I work at a model railway exhibition. The exhibition layout is controlled by a PC with a program specially programmed for this layout, running on MS-DOS.

…and it's been like this for about 20-25 years now. The hard drive will eventually fail.

I'm worried that the hard drive will eventually fail. However, I don't really want to clone it with Windows or anything similar, because I'm afraid that modern operating systems either won't recognize the hard drive at all or will even "populate" it with temporary files, so that after a successful cloning, the hard drive will be reinserted into the PC, and MS-DOS will no longer be able to work with it. Is my fear justified?

I've also been wondering whether it might be possible to convert or convert MS-DOS programs to readable formats for Windows 10. Is there any way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it is possible to run MS-DOS programs under Windows 10. You can either use Windows 10 compatibility mode, use an emulator like DOSBox or use a virtualization tool like VirtualBox or VMware Workstation.

Should run on Windows if there are no 16-bit programs.

There’s a DOS emulator called DOS Box. It can emulsify these programs and thus even run old do programs on other systems beside Windows. The emulator is available free of charge via Google.

I wrote about Google available. This does not mean that Google has written the program. Google is only the mediator.

No. You’ll be right there. Advertisement would be if you had any ad seen by every hoof and kiss, whether it is children, adolescents, adult or pensioners.

However, Google is an intermediary. Google does not simply display advertisements, it shows the advertisement you are looking for explicitly. Look for watches, you get watches, but for a certain ranking. Whoever pays the most, whose advertising is best communicated to you.
Google is an intermediary. Nothing else.

Have you ever wondered how Google makes money?

They don’t do it either. Google only spits links

I built a computer with a dual core processor and a hard disk (IDE) with 120GB, disk drive and CD-Rom.
Have MS DOS 6.22 installed easily, as well as WIN 3.11.
Think this is the better way, so you have the opportunity to overplay the control program easily and create a backup copy.

DOS requirements are so low that a DOS emulator is completely sufficient. It might be difficult to pass the data from the old computer to the new system. Then you’ll have a disk drive or reader.

would recommend you to make a backup from the board and exchange it with you

I also thought about whether it would not be possible to make or convert MS-DOS programs for Windows 10 readable. Is that something?

Under MS Windoof it is certainly not too old.

But under Linux it is possible.

Under Windows this should fit if it is not 16-bit software – in this case you need DOSBox or a VM with maximum XP.

Install the compatibility layer “Wine” under Linux

No, your fear is not justified, after all every child today knows that one can secure his system, also a DOS system by means of data backup.

Programs can be reprogrammed for Win 10 if you want to.

Well, if you can’t do that, there are finally programmers. However, I think that you should leave everything as it is.
