Can kiwis be stored in closed Styrofoam boxes?
We sometimes harvest up to 60 kg of fruit from our kiwi tree (after the first frost or at the end of October/November). We store them protected on a rack in our enclosed garden shed and enjoy them until March. Unfortunately, mice eat through plastic, paper, and cardboard, and then through the kiwis—leaving their droppings behind them! Can I store the kiwis in closed Styrofoam boxes, or do they need air?
I would like to answer that. Kiwis from my own harvest I find wonderful. I think I’ll try that too. Many years ago, our daily newspaper saw a report that someone has harvested Kiwis from their own harvest. Also a large amount, and also allegedly stable until March. I can’t believe that. If you buy kiwis in the store, keep the maximum 1 month.
Do you need the air? I think so. Not airtight. It can be enough to put a match in between.
Apples, fruits are stored at low temperatures, and increased CO2 content.
