Can I write a Wattpad sequel?

Hi, I read a story on Wattpad that I really enjoyed, but it's not finished, and the last update was 2.5 years ago. So, I'll probably never update it again. I came up with my own ending and thought it would be great to share it with others.

So, for example, am I allowed to start a story and then write in the first chapter that it's a continuation of the other story, and then write my own imaginary sequel? And am I also allowed to write in the comments in the last chapter of the original story that I've written a sequel?

Or is the whole idea completely stupid because it somehow violates copyright or something?

I’d write the author first. If you don’t get an answer (most likely at 2.5 years), I would just write the story.

However, I would write this in the foreword:

All rights of the basic idea (even if you write the sequel, it is basically their idea/basic idea) belongs to XX. Here I only write my idea of the continuation.

You can still rewrite it and so, but the content should be the same. Otherwise, you finally sound the idea (even if it is only the continuation). Stop mentioning.

For me this is a clear no!

I myself would also not want someone to continue my started books and thus “profit” my idea, especially not without my understanding. You don’t know whether this person has written the book (and wants to publish it) and so on. So dear fingers.

Copyright does not exist in Germany, the copyright law applies to you and this is quite clear here:

The addition of an already existing work without an extra license (therefore there are often also fan licenses in large novel series, since “Fan Fictions” would otherwise be included here, for example) if it is used in the intellectual property of the original work (e.g. the same title, the same figures, the same world, etc.), a redesign and this need of the author’s approval. If this is not present and the work is still used and distributed, this is punishable and can be punished with imprisonment up to three years or a fine (§§ 23, 106 UrhG).

Apart from that, if you’re planning to publish stories on the Internet, you should also discuss the Media State Treaty and the Telemedia Act. If you live in Germany, you are obliged (also on third-party pages such as Wattpad) to provide an imprint for such works. You can dismiss quite a lot of people there, because this duty is very much ignored.

Good question is a German platform, so if you don’t come from Germany, you should always state your country with legal issues.

Why don’t you write to the creator of history and ask if that’s okay? I wouldn’t publish anything without permission.

You would have to ask the author of the story, but if there hasn’t been anything for a long time, it can also be that the user is simply not on Wattpad anymore…

If no one reacts to your message, I’d just do it. If you take it exactly you don’t sound a story. Whether it’s forbidden to use an idea or write a catchy story on, I don’t know. Imagine that one or two users might be excited about it.

What’s your name on Wattpad if I can ask?

I’d ask, just if you want to advertise in the last chapter with a comment and it’s just polite.
