Can driver updates destroy my hardware?

Hey, PC newbie here,

I updated my drivers yesterday with Snappy Driver Installer Origin, and then it froze when I restarted. I then performed a hard reset, rebooted the PC, and reinstalled the Intel system driver, and it worked fine afterward.

My question now is, can driver updates damage hardware? Because I'm worried about my PC.

Well, they could.

HP printers were also destroyed by HP's printer update

Ok, it was pure intention of HP to take older devices out of circulation,

And

It wasn't the drivers but the printer software.

But in principle, this would be possible with the updates, at least theoretically

Under certain circumstances, it's possible. You always get drivers directly from the manufacturer. And if everything's working, leave it at that. Never change a running system.

How updates are supposed to destroy your hardware

Ok if you download a virus it is possible

But why should this happen with a driver update
