Can air conditioning make you sick?

So I was just on vacation and it was very, very hot in the room and outside and I kept the air conditioning on.

I got a slight cold and later a slight sore throat and earache. Is that normal?

When cold air strikes the mucous membranes, the temperature decreases in them, they are bleeding and drying out worse. The result is that the mucous membranes in the neck, mouth and nose lose their protective effect and are more susceptible to virus diseases.

Air conditioning remove air moisture. The air that is delivered by it. is therefore more dry than that which was previously absorbed by it.

There are various factors why air conditioning makes sick. These are the most common causes:

  • The body cools out:Outside it is brewing hot, and hardly you go into a building, you feel like sitting in a fridge. At the first moment, this feels great, but with time, most buildings and means of transport feel too strongly cooled down. The large temperature fluctuations are a strain for the body, explains expert Dr. Junge-Hülsing. Because in the summer you often walk up and sweat in cooled rooms. This results in the so-called evaporation cold: The sweat on the skin, which already serves to cool the body, and then even low room temperatures allow the body to cool even faster. And a cooled body weakens the immune system, which in turn makes it more prone to infections, since viruses can be prevented less well.
  • Tensile air can lead to muscle tension:Air conditioning continuously pust a uniform stream of cool air into the room. Anyone who gets this stream directly to the skin is standing or sitting in the air train. If you are exposed to this airflow for a longer period of time, the muscles come together because of the cold and relax. Maybe you’ve had a stiff neck before and you know this feeling when the head just can’t turn right to the side. In many cases, heat provides a recovery.
  • Train air can trigger ear infections:“Pust the air all the time on the ear and the auditory canal is perhaps still moist from the pool or sea and therefore more susceptible, then the airflow of the air conditioning promotes an external ear inflammation,” says Dr. Junge-Hülsing. The same applies to the convertible or when one of the winds blows around the ears. For inflammation, however, the air flow must be laminar – i.e. even – over a longer period of time, according to the expert. A wind booe is once short and violent, while an air conditioning is essential to pust.
  • Air conditioning can be a breeding ground for mushrooms:Warm air can absorb a lot of water, but when the air conditioning cools down the air, the water is discharged as condensation water. In it, pathogens can settle in and the air conditioning can mushroom with it, warns Dr. Junge-Hülsing. This can lead to sneezing, coughing or a running nose, especially for people with a mold allergy. Therefore, it is important to keep air conditioning clean and to wait regularly.
