Camper conversion: Is 700kg payload enough?

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to convert an old panel van into a camper van in the near future. Since I'd like a vehicle with an H license plate, and I generally prefer vehicles built between 1980 and 1990, the Mercedes L 407D is currently a good option for me. It can hold a lot. You can pick these things up for reasonable prices on mobile.de, but I only have a B driver's license, so you have to reduce the weight of the vehicles. (I can only go up to 3.5 tons.) Because the 407D's description says it has an unladen weight of 2.8 tons, the 700kg payload seems a bit low to me, considering you'd need to use a lot of wood and some electronic equipment when converting. It all adds up pretty quickly, I think.

Does anyone know if 700 kg is enough for a normal conversion, two people, and their luggage? I have no idea. And I don't want to have to get a C driver's license because of something like that… xD

thanks in advance

That’s enough if you’re making the extension real. So: poplar plywood on wooden frame, no chipboard, no heavy parts. But, that thing’s loud. Had a 406, 3.5 tom with 54 hp (or so). There are different translations, mine was a 4-speed city car driven and short translation, the hell on long distances. voluntarily 70 Km/h despite earopax. Still liked driving, had charm.

Freshwater – wastewater tanks, which can be quickly estimated and the camper extensions which are themselves made can be dubiously forgotten unless you are competent / carpenter and has enough coal..

So I would take a Mercedes of the T2 series the successor, because there are also beautiful used high quality and the already loosely runs a hundred and has a good expansion of the Niesmann Clou as 711s or 811s with 670 overall length was always my personal favorite.. with Alkoven.. He does not eat your hair from your head. Motors OM 364 or better the 364 LA with turbo charge What does the right zul driving licence mean to make you can drive up to 7.5 tons.

The four-cylinders from the OM 616 car, for example, are overwhelmed with the vehicle after my opinion, which is also noticeable during consumption… He takes around the 18 – 25 liter diesel.

The boxes also have become rare with H kennzeichen, but the advantage for the Varios and predecessors of the T2 named Düsseldorfer is still getting all the parts for the predecessor 407 that you are planning no longer and if for very expensive money and that is only worth for individualists.

A better investment with the vehicle you are planning on will not be lucky.

You realize that you lose the H sign at the latest when it is not an original or (detectable) contemporary installation?

Apart from this, the requirements for an H-character have attracted very much, since the vehicle has to be almost like a new car. With condition 2 to get one or to keep at the next Tüv will be difficult, rather impossible.

I’m just saying this because you shouldn’t be so stiffened on it, but you’d rather be looking for a practically usable vehicle for your needs – without (probably) possible H-mark.

With minimal expansion it can work. If, of course, kitchen line, chimney cabinet, solar batteries, 150l freshwater tank, etc., it will become quite fast.

I’m just going to take a 7.5.

If you really want to expand yourself, a 7.5 tons with box construction would possibly be conceivable. There are more possibilities for this. Water, sewage, etc.

So a little MAN, Benz or an armicraft. A REO zb. There’s a big deal.

This is just the question whether you want to live or live inside.

For me, a camper needs an autonomous power supply, wet cell and gas/generator fuel for 2 weeks. Kitchen, bed (not at the dining table). I don’t need a TV or something like that.
