Build your own mono adapter?

Good morning,

If I want to run a stereo jack cable to a single RCA plug, can I simply bridge the L and R signals to get a mono signal?

Just so bridges you should avoid that may be good or your stereo channels chase each other too much electricity in the wrong direction through the final stage.

Commercial cables sum up the channels with a pair of resistors.

In my Source 470ohm resistors are recommended

For mono playback it is enough to take the left channel and leave the right completely. The important information is usually arranged exactly in the middle of the panorama anyway.

Depends on what you call “complete”. The volume differences between the right and left channel are usually not very extreme, and the left channel is still considered the “monocompatible” channel, which sound engineers should also treat as such.

To sum both channels via resistors, on the other hand, makes the sound actually worse, since phase shifts between left and right channel (which separately result in a beautiful stereo) then overlap and can lead to unpleasant amplifications and extinction of frequencies.
