If ne old firmware is on the lens, this can make a pretty difference as day and night. So I came to a cheap 100-400mm – the owner thought it was broken because the picture stick was crap. New firmware and the image was suddenly bomb-resistant stabilized.

But if you are satisfied with the current functions of the lens, you do not need it.
You can photograph without such additional settings.
