You won’t like it, but despite its fascination, the E38 is definitely one of the cars you dream of rather than buying or driving. If he’s driving, he’s great, but usually he doesn’t.

I had a BMW 728i E38 (first registration in March 1997), where good and evil were very close together and where I look to recommend that. It was a problem to find various spare parts that started with paints and paints – BMW does not supply the paints anymore; I was “263 dark blue”. Fortunately, I was able to help myself with an almost identical Mercedes color (“904 dark blue”), otherwise a painter would have to mix the paint extra for a lot of money.

Actually, it’s all in trouble. The E38 likes to smell, has had electronic problems already in its new car time and combines everything that old cars have to offer from maintenance store – it has just come into the years and a car where you have to look exactly everywhere. Motors and gears are usually solid, the ZF-automatic can also be in need of overhaul at age (as with E32, E34, etc.) and then the search for a specialist for automatic transmission starts because BMW cannot do this.

I had the 728i with 193 hp and manual. The engine and the gear were the chocolate side of the car – the “small” engine delivered enough strength and temperament at all times, the gears were exactly one and engine/gears were perfectly matched – the power development of my BMW was very harmonic and the consumption was in everyday life at about eleven litres to 100 kilometers with normal driving and clean running of the gears. This goes for size and year of construction; a Mercedes S280 (W140) has used more.

The problem is that you cannot really “screw” on the E38 itself as a gifted technician. At the E32 this went partly (where I do not recommend the one that is hobby), the E38 is much too installed and too complex, has too much electronics and too much technology on board.

Furthermore, the typical E38 overwhelms free workshops, while BMW usually can neither help nor wants to help with an older model. At BMW, the workshop staff is often young and incompetent, while at the Leasing-Einser the diagnostic device can plug in and make a small service with oil change, but everything else is already overwhelming and the E38 is right.

This crafted thing on the inserat, where sports suspension, bass box and interior lighting were certainly more important than the technology and the owner did not have the right satisfaction (because a laughing smiley would have to stand for satisfied customers) is a used man of the brand “Finger weg”.
