Buy BMW 118d F20?

Hello,

I wanted to ask if anyone knows anything about this model because I would like to buy one with 170,000km on the clock. The car is in good condition.

I have often read that this model has problems with the timing chain and does not survive more than 200,000km.

So my question is, would you advise against it or can I buy it without hesitation?

LG😊

Control chain is known at the engine (n47) from 2015 he has the newer engine (b47), which does not have the problems.

At 170,000 km you can reasonably assume that something was done on the control chain in any way or it is not affected if you hear nothing.

On Youtube there are some reports in which people bought an n47 with over 200,000 km and then shortly after buying the control chain makes noises. Then they are either deaf or the tour was manipulated. This doesn’t happen from today to tomorrow.

Look at him, go to a workshop or take one with him. If the problems make you listen to that. The sliding rails have been inferior and the chain has elongated. Any relevant defect notices someone who has a little idea.

170 tsd km are nothing for a diesel. Of course there are exceptions. The cars are not designed for 150-180 tsd km. If that comes from the manufacturer, you can think why.

I don’t know how people deal with their cars that are out 300,000 tsd km ago. If someone tells me that at 50,000 km he has to replace the complete suspension (despite good base and high part quality) or that he has to change all 30,000 km of loading, then okay. Someone like that will tell you that after 200,000 shifts. That’s not the rule.

I know more people who have the first injectors or turbochargers at 350 tsd km (including in the engine). DPF is most likely due. Professional cleaning could be enough. That would be the only thing that could come to the next 50 to 100,000 km when it comes to good care.

Crossbars etc. you can look at it when it’s done, good. In running performance, the one or other spare parts have already been exchanged.

If everything fits, buy it.

With a modern diesel with running performance, you always have to count on expensive repairs:

  • the diesel particle filter will eventually be full (free burning costs 500,- €, a new > 1T€)
  • coke or become leaky (400 € per piece)
  • the two-mass flywheel at some point (with clutch > 2T€)

The car has problems with the control chain (always > 1T€).

Of course, there are also the usual “construction sites” on a vehicle with the running power (brakes, suspensions, auxiliary units of the motor, etc.).

My honest answer has been deleted since she was too critical or Truths are not tolerated. Again. Let the fingers of cars whose expenses will ruin you. A good looking car does not have to be inside and under the sheet. The F20 gets good reviews, with the km stand I say no. I saw the worst one with totally glammed brakes at the back and rusted brake cables. Let him stand for not German.
